Not particularly, the ships just have to be paired up somehow (so two fighters that could join up to make a bigger ship, or a mining ship and a remote mining drone, etc...).

I have a few questions, and I hope they are not too dumb.

The competition will be judged on that single render alone, and not any other material to back up a concept or function of a ship?

Would be cool if I could set a scene on the final render, but still have a chance to "explain" the concept or function of a certain ship type.

Also:

I am currently working on a ship type that can be made up of lots and lots of different modules - will it count as more than one model if I make those modules but randomize them on a few models (they will of cause be on the same texture sheet).

If not, and the model have to be one single piece/object - am I allowed to rig it so I can demonstrate several poses on the final render - i.e. engine configurations or wing angles.

I think I know the answer to most of the questions - but I just want to make sure so I dont spend a lot of time on stuff thats not allowed anyway.

Thanks in advance.

rigging for poses is fine as far as i know.
Not sure about the amount of models.
All in all i think its about the final product only so just one render of what you liked best.

Who are the judges?
And how much will they take into account if a concept is thought of yourself or used from somewhere else ?

My initial thoughts are...

The competition will be judged on the concept, model and textures, although final presentation will be taken into account.

The competition calls for 2 ships. I think having loads of ships made from different modules may fall outside the competition bounds.

Rigging it's fine, yeah. Things like that will count towards ship design/concept and presentation.

Requiem2D has the final say, though, best not to act on these until he's verified it.

And yes, Xoliul, original concepts are favoured and concepts will be taken into consideration during judging. I'm not sure who the final panel of judges are just yet, though.

Roger, answers as expected. But better safe than sorry

Depends how size is interpreted, but a Mothership must be seen as a parent to the Sistership. This may be in more weapons, size or another superior ability which can be visually interpreted. If you choose to have these two combine in order to create an absolute monster of a ship, then by all means but remember the mother/sister relation.

Your render is essentially your selling point, hence your presentation needs to be strong. Everything plays a part in score as so: Concept 15%, Model 35%, Texture 35%, Presenation 15%. If you wish to add text outside of your render, that is fine, take into consideration the judges time and attention span (i.e. if the text gets too long winded).

You'll need a Mothership & a Sistership. I wouldn't display multiple meshes which are significantly different because of the position of various modules. Stick with the best configuration for your final render.

Yes, by all means. Just remember, you only have 800x600 for both ships.
