Competition #12 - sarge mat

Hey all. I am new to the forums and looking to improve my Max skills so I though hell why not enter. I know I won’t win but it’s all a bit of crack.

Here is my reference:

After about an hour or so:

Still working on the top bit I might have to change it slightly due to the 100 tri count. Any tips on reducing triangles because I am getting quite close to the 1000 limit for the competition.

Thanks

To use fewer triangles, think about what detail will be visible to the player. Nobody's going to be so low and so close to the base that they'll be able to see all that indentation and layers and stuff. Simple cubes would probably be best. You can always go back and add the detail later if it turns out you have the tris to spare.

Going to spend some time fixing it up now and textureing it.

you don't want to have the stop sign's vertices with such a huge chamfer! it's not realistic!
btw it would spare you some tris to have the stop sign as a simple 8-sided cylinder.

i see you kept a great amount of detail in the base, and that's why you didn't manage to lathe the top section yet, because of tri count limit.

you probably should turn down the sides of both your large cylinders and get the detail you want on them through a normal map.

that's all I've got to say, the rest is good luck!

Thanks for the advice.

Here is how it look at the moment. Still a lot to do includeing the stuff you adviced me to. The lighting is shit ATM, how do you reset it again because it wont go back to normal even after i remove all the lights, most of the textures are just their to get a better idea of how it looks.

go to the rendering > advanced lighting options and remove any advanced lighting you are using. or you can just move the lights somewhere decent.
if you really can't remove the lighting, then save your work, select your piece (not the lights), then export selection to a .fbx file, reset max and then import that .fbx file into the default, empty, lightless scene.

edit:

dont think i am going to bother with entering this time. It was a great learning experence and i am just going to wait for the next one. How ever i think i will go back to it and make it but expand on the tri limit
