Competition #11 - ZASkaggs

I'm thrilled the C&C theme was dropped, it's a lot easier to think of ideas now. I didn't see anyone else doing an Asian themed entry yet, so here goes. I'm making a barracks for Sōhei warrior monks.

Basic stuff right now, update soon.

Ugly render, but I'm tired.

I've added a bit of detailing. Most of the cooler details (sword racks, rug, windows, etc...) are going to rely on an alpha map so they aren't visible now, but soon!

On the left is a vertical sign to read something like Temple Barracks. At least that's what I'm hoping. I can't really figure out where to put it right now so I just tucked it off to the side at an angle.

1489 tris, now where can I add 11 more?

You could use those 11 tris to add a little spire to the front part of the building where the roof comes to a point. Maybe hang a banner off of it.

I've actually already tried that but couldn't get it to look right, so I made the sign on the ground instead. I figured I had to have some surface that can carry a team color so the player knows who's barracks it is. I might try just adding a little spire at the point as a minor decoration though.

Unwrapped and started texturing. Not much yet.

You might also think about some stripes on the roof for the team colors. RTS games usually make those super explicit.

You're right of course, but whenever I add too much of an obvious team color I think it starts to take away from the quality of the model's texture (and I need what little I can get ). I think what I might do is scrap the idea of including the team color on the model itself and just make a colored ring below the building after I'm done.

Texture update:

It doesn't look as nice as I'd hoped, but things seem to be coming together.

Well, the first texture were all grey, and now the second one is all brown. I think you need to get some more color-variation in there

Some parts of the texture doesn't really look too asian imho, roof could probobly go well with these kind of tiles for example, think that would add a lot to it

And roof texture looks kinda lowres, you might proboly want that to have a larger space on the UV while the interiors probobly could be lowered.

Hey ZASkaggs. Nice model. It looks very credible. On the colors however I think you need to blend in a strong color that'll dominate for example the woodwork and perhapes leave out the grime and dirt. I don't imagine a chinese traditional banner being all muddied up like that.

Keep going
