The Ultimate Pick-up - Results!

After a little delay, it is time for the results of our 10th competition. First of all I would like to say that we are very pleased with the large number of entries, and I would like thank everybody who participated in this competition. Now to the results. StefanH's medkit was our judges favorite, and therefor he can go home with the first prize, congratulations! The second place goes to weasel.acuh5o, third place is for LOOM. Congrats to the both of you!

LOOM: An original and strong entry, good quality in the model and the textures. The only weak points in my opinion is that the apples could have been a bit more realistic in their specularity and overall look aswell as the fact that this piece does not communicate "power-up" to me instantly either.

StefanH: A very nice entry that i like a lot. The quality in both the modeling and the textures is very good and the finished product is very strong. What stood between this and the top position is that i wish the concept itself was a bit more original but still a very good delivery.

Doylle: Another good entry, the modeling and texturing is of good quality. I do feel that the grungy/gritty look of the texturing is a bit strong in some places and the concept could have been a bit more original and maybe even strays a bit away from the power-up category.

Yin: Now here's an entry i was unsure about how to grade. The concept itself could have been a bit more original and strayed more form the traditional look of health power-ups, the diffuse texture also has a lot of room for improvement in terms of getting the maximum out of the am mount of pixels you have to play with. but the reason for this being among the top five for me is that i really liked how the finished product ended up. While its very traditional it still looks cool and it really does communicate power-up to me.

There where a lot of good quality entrys this time and I wish i had time to write comments for more of them and even more in depth comments about the top five. Keep up the awesome work people!

his maps in proper proportion, and It looked gorgeous. My only nitpick was
the concept was not as imaginative as I would like, but it was a wonderful
execution and deserves to win this comp in my opinion.

My Second place goes to Flam:
I loved this piece. It is what it is. A beautifully modeled and textured
Syringe full of powerup juice. Man it's awesome. I love the interior of the
case, I wish you would have put a bit more time into the texture of the back
of the power up, it would have felt a bit more complete. But what you did
show, was very cool.

My Third Place goes to LOOM:
Man I like them apples! Everything was spot on actually, the only reason it
did not place higer in my list is because it was just a beautiful bag of
apples and not much else.

4th goes to Zeinthar:
Lots fo talent exhibited in this entry. It was not a very original concept
though, but the execution was very nice. The presentation was cool too.

5th goes to reeke
Great off the beaten path concept. I really liked it. Also Decent Modeling
and texturing put this entry in my 5th spot.

Great job to everyone that finished! There where some really cool ideas, and
I think after a while a lot of these artists are going to hone their skill
with polygon and pixel, and we are gonna see some great stuff in future
competitions.

2. StefanH:
A med-pack is not the most original idea, but he executed it so well that this deserves all the credit, great texture and great use of normal maps.

3. doylle: I am in doubt if it's technically a pick-up, but the excellent use of the limits that were giving are for me a well deserved 3rd place, great use of UV space and nice texturework.

4. LOOM: Original idea, great texturework, UV map for this model is pretty simple, and somehow he maybe could have used the triangecount more to it's fullest, great work none the less.

5. Rawk777: The pick-up as we know it to be, overall great work, texture and more are decent, the pick-up floor pad although nice would imHo not suit any game (gameplay wise).
Time to wrap this up. We will be back for #11!

Congratulations to all!

But I'm a little disappointed that there were no comments for the rest of us. I'd like to know what I need to work on, since I scored so low.

Congratulations!

This was a fun contest... I agree with Flakk though, perhaps some more comment love for the rest of us would help with our improvement. I understand why you didn't though, writing comments for every entry would have taken ALOT of extra time...

But yes, once again, congrats! The top 3 pieces were all VERY well done, bravo bravo.

Well played, dudes. Congrats all round, well deserved

Feedback on everyone would be nice, but we did have a staggering 35 entries for this competition, heh :P

About the comments: Due to the large number of submissions we asked the judges only to comment their top 5. There is still the wip thead for each piece that can be used to get good critics. I do understand your point though, so we can look into this for future competitions...

woot, thanks a lot guys. really makes my (rainy) day.

I agree on the points made about the comments. I'd be nice to have feedback for everyone and from everyone, but writing up 35 comments is a serious task... so, what doylle said.

Well done winners! Extra congrats to Stefan.

Good job judges. Valid and helpful comments all round, tbh.

What a great comp all around. High standards of work, and the sheer size of it! Dayumn. Great stuff
