Yeah, it kind of doesn't make sense that the top 5 people get the feedback, when the bottom 5 are the ones who probably need it the most.
I agree with you, tychocelchuuu. When I entered the comp, I was sure I wouldn't win, so the main reason I entered was to get feedback from the judges and help improve my future work. So, it's safe to say I left with nothing. I admit I didn't make my piece as well as I could, though.

except a WIP thread, experience in modeling and texturing a pickup and seeing how other people approach the task of course.

Think you're making this a little more dramatic then it seems. First, you got feedback althrough the comp (given you were active in it) and you can always ask for feedback after the comp. Second, if you're leaving this comp with nothing, are you saying you've learnt absolutely nothing or haven't bettered yourself in anyway?

Not quite what I mean. I'm saying I left with the feeling I could have done better, and I'm kinda mad at myself for not making another piece to try to best the one I submitted!

But there's always a next time, innit? I hope I do better then.

Hey Guys! Don't be so harsh on yourselves.
For those who didn't place in the top five, the comments are supposed to be in the wip threads you create. If you never got any crits in your wip thread, then there is a problem.
Due to time I could not comment on every entry. But just taking an honest look at your work and comparing it to the top 5 should be enough. I will tell you right now many entries did not get high marks simply because of Wasteful Poly usage and texture maps that where just basically straight color with a poorly executed normal map.
You can't rely on spec and normal maps to handle everything. It seems many of you Know the steps to make these maps but you still lack the artistry required to make it art.
Keep pushing yourselves you can't become a pro overnight. That what these comps are for. It's so awesome to see people grow and push their art skills.
Don't be discouraged, just learn from what people did right.
Take a look at your maps and ask yourself "Is this a winning Texture map"?
Take a look at your model and ask yourself "Is this model efficient with polygons, while
still conveying the silhouette and Idea I wish to convey"?
And lastly "Is this a competitive entry"?
Keep asking yourselves these questions on every asset you make and eventually you'll be making the kind of assets that get you jobs.

Don't get me wrong, I never thought I would place in the top section of this comp, mainly because my entry was just something to spend a few hours per week on after work, but my wip thread had 319 views and a total of 8 posts....5 of those posts were by myself.

Infact, I only recieved one crit (about the proportion of my model) the other posts we asking about how I made the texture. Obviously no one 'has' to comment, and I'm not trying to say my cr@p model is anyone's fault but mine, but it certainly goes to show who the unpopular members are.

The amount of entries is very impressive, shame I couldnt compete this time around, I made a thread but i've been bombarded at work.

It's a shame everyone can't get the final judges opinions, but you have to be realistic in these circumstances (volunteers are giving up their time, 35 entries etc) and as one guy rightly said - you should be able to pick out comments from the top 5 that will improve your own work. I understand getting a personal mention is nice thing but it just cant be possible as the site grows.

Congrats to the top3, it would have probably have been mine as well although perhaps in a different order. Good stuff.

Pruv - i know what you're saying mate, but i dont think its just about popular people - rather popular ideas. I'm pretty much an unknown on these boards, but my post apoc vehicle got a fair bit of attention. That wasn't a fluke or an accident, I just made something that i knew would appeal to a lot of games players. Think tactically

Good competition, gave me something to do. Though i'd like to know why my entry scored so bad when everybody else seemed to like it.

Slip I think you have a selective reading problem. There were plenty of people telling you to go back to your first idea very early on. There were plenty of people trying to help you but you actually discarded quite a lot of their comments, or justified to yourself why you wouldnt change things. Go back and read through again and you will see what I mean. Another reason to mark you down for the entry was poor poly usage imo, having seen the wire the carrot is seriously overdone in the tri department.

I'm not trying to put you down or anything like that. The important thing isn't about where you come in a competition, it's that you're learning stuff and taking on board everyones comments. You can't really lose in a competition like this, unless of course nobody comments on your work at all
