Competition #10 - OrganizedChaos

Hm.... well, this is what I have so far. I've been tossing back ideas for a while now and decided a cornucopia would be pretty fun and rewarding as a health item. Although, the dinner in return to castle wolfenstein will never loose it's charm.

I'm not sure if I'm finished with the modeling stage yet. I've been considering giving it more leaves, or a glow, or something. I don't have too much to work with (polycount is at 1482) but that doesn't mean I can't cut back on what's already there.

Sweet entry I'm hungry now Yeah.. glow would be nice. More leaves would be nice too although not necessary. I'd say you can remove those little fruits (can't tell what they are) since they are so little and take a lot of tris. I'm not sure how you would made a glow on this... in such a way that it won't look odd :| the shape is really irregular. So... maybe just use what you have on more leaves.

Haha, yeah, the grapes? One of my friends suggested I make a shape and define the grapes out of that (through normal mapping) instead of having separate geometry for them.

The only way I can think of having a glow without it being too irregular is maybe having it come from the inside of the horn. But yeah, I am definitely starting to think more leaves, and maybe those twirly things, that usually exist in cornucopias would be nice.

Or maybe a steak.

This is a really nice entry. With great textures this will rock my socks off!!!
Be sure to make them really shine. Fruits are such a cool sujet. I'm a bit jealous i didn't think of it myself (will start an entry soon).
Suggestion: You should use geospheres for the apples, melons and so on. This saves tris and is looking better.

I would definitely go for a glow coming out from the inside of the horn. It doesn't have to be really bright; just extrude the edge ring around the opening out a little bit and add the glow to that. The grapes aren't too bad but they are a pretty big waste of polys compared to their size. You might be better off with strawberries or something that would be a little large and take the same amount of tris.

StefanH- thanks for the advice. I guess geospheres are a max feature only? I went ahead and tried replacing what I had made out of spheres with geospheres, and yes, it definitely did cut the poly count, and I agree, it looks a lot better, so thanks.

I took out the grapes for now and threw on some differently colored lamberts. Getting rid of the grapes and replacing the spheres brought my poly count to 1,096, which is really nice. I miss them though, so I might try to bring them back. I might also add some leaves to the corn. I'm still considering whether or not I want a glow... hmm.. :\

But here's a quick adjustment image for the time being.

I believe Maya has geospheres, although they aren't called that. They were just added in 7 or 8.

Hm, I looked and I found something called platonic solids that seem extremely similar to geospheres, but you couldn't adjust the amount of polys in them, from what I could tell.

I tried a little glow test and I'm not sure I like it very much. Of course, I probably spent 3 minutes doing it, so maybe if I do it right I'll change my mind.

I brought the grapes back this time as a continuous mesh instead of separate geometry. Polycount is at 1375 (without glow border). I'm not sure if I should add anything more or not at this point. Any suggestions? Random fruits?

Alright- I laid out the uvs. I'm still nowhere near a pro at doing it, but I figure the point is to try to take up as much of the space as you can.

I guess the next step is taking it into zbrush

Alright, well, I'm new at Zbrush, so naturally I can't tell if I'm doing something wrong or not.

Is it supposed to look that bad after you divide it? And is there any way I can move objects (like that corn) so I can work on other objects without them getting in the way?
