Hmm doesn't that pertain to practically all other art-related fields? The way I see it, there are legions of people who draw and paint as a hobby, some of whom might decide to get into an art career. Couple that with others who switch to game art from other art fields and you're just a pinprick in a bucket of competition. Here's an article that might be helpful..

But I'm hoping that as long as you're decent and show potential, someone would pick you up, heck even for an unpaid internship or something.
