The reason why i don't use the offset filter is that when you use the offset filter your image is merged together in 1 layer. I personnaly find it easier to just switch between layers, rather than making selections over and over again to work with dodge/burn. I could slice them up after i use the offset filter, but that wouldn't realy save time.
I tested the unsharp filter on different color chanels, and it indeed has a subtle difference. I didn't know that. I'll see if i have time to change the tutorial. Changing to lab color mode looks like alot of efford for something that you can do almost equaly well with burn and dodge in RGB mode. Not to forget that chaning to lab color can mess up your file if you're using adjustment layers. In most cases you don't have any adjustment layes at that point, but still. I haven't fully checked it out yet, but i sure will next time i'm making a texture...
