Not only are they learning a cool app (ZBrush or Mudbox) but they also gain knowledge which might prove quite useful in the gaming-industry. It's also a lot of fun.. and now that Crazybump is a complete application and requiring a license, people start thinking it might be a good thing to both save money while gaining knowledge at the same time.

Absolutely agree and I don't blame them either. I my self am 'trying'(when I can find the time) to learn zbrush for that same reason.
( btw, if any one knows any links for good video tutorials for beginners I would be very great full! ta).
I just meant that from time to time its good to have a comp that encourages hand painting textures with more detail rather than relying on sculpting for the details. I like to see how well people can paint textures in the time limit rather than sculpting a normal map.
Also its give those that arn't so advanced with the sculpting a chance to compete.
I have said it before but I actually think it would be great to have another comp that is just for sculpting. That would be cool imo.
