Resetting your view does fix this problem, another way to work around this without having to try to reset your view is to use the dolly zoom by holding ctrl+alt and then moving your mouse up and back. This acts like your pulling your view around on a dolly. Once you mess around with this you'll see that it is very useful and also helps restore some of the zoom like resetting does.
