Cool article. If I may add one thing: Lesson one: unplug! Take off your head phones! Turn off the radio! Switch off the CD! Turn off the tape! Close the door!
I got this from Richard Williams's "The Animator's Survival Kit"
The story goes that Williams asked Milt Kahl if he ever listed to classical music while he was working. According to Williams, Kahl burst out: "of all the s-s-s-stupid god-god-god-damned questions I-I-I've never heard such I-I-I-I Never heard a-a-a-f-f-f-f-stupid question!
Iy-iy-iy-iy- I'm not SMART enough to think of more than one thing at a time." (Williams 2001: 41-45)
From:
Williams, Richards. The Animator's Survival Kit. London: Faber & Faber, 2001.
Lesson one ends with a picture of Williams hard at work, wearing a sweater with "Animation is concentration" on it.
Try it! When I need to get work done, be it a paper for university; to study for an exam; finish an animation; or anything else serious, I lock myself up, switch of everything, pull out my internet cable, get myself a mug of tea and start cracking. It is amazing what you can do if you just put your mind to one thing alone.
