I agree the rocks here are sort of oozing out of the metal frame.
Imagine that the rock has been carved away and afterwards the metal supports have been put in place to give strutural support to the tunnel. That way there's only a couple of tiny rock outcrops peeking into the metal support and the rest is concave behind it.
