Finding the right engine

I want to make a 3d game. I realize that its a difficult task but by choosing to make a simple game with simple graphics and fairly basic gameplay it might be possible for one person to churn out a decent product.

What i want to make is a 3d rail-shooter. It's fairly basic in terms of both gameplay and level-design. And I'm hoping to make 3d art reminiscent of the late playstation 1 era. so that beats the complexity down allot as well.

So what engine is good for this? I've looked at the Unreal 3 engine and the Unity engine. The unreal engine is very powerful, perhaps too powerful, i also don't need most of the advanced features its offering, but since its free its an interesting candidate.
For the unity engine i would have to pay a bit to give it decent functionality but otherwise it seems pretty good.

Maybe I've missed some amazing engine that could be perfect for making a rail-shooter with simple graphics. what do you people think?
