"When one has a problem with rats one calls a rat catcher. With an infestation of witches a rat catcher will not suffice."
Eric Sharp, treatise on Common Social Disease, London 1746.
The surmise is that people are inherently good. When they are being bad it is the witch inside them that has been given too much control. Since the 14th century equalizers, or enforcers have been called Witch Catchers and this one below is my vision of one, in progress. Crits appreciated.

A bit closer
NEX (Witch Catcher).
Before the moon had set in it's oriental sky he had prevented three rapes, although he had raped hundreds, saved a child from murder, although he had exterminated thousands, and prevented the mugging of an elderly couple, although he had summarily executed any of his servants if they were unlucky enough to reach the age of thirty cycles.
Nex Cipher awoke with a start in a strange city surrounded by alien scents and sounds when he remembered that he was in the heart of Istanbul. The boy from Cambridge England had grown up yearning for an adventurous life, but was sure this was not what he had planned as this was the fifth major city in ten years. Nex's head was filled with the remnants of disturbing images from the night before, and a faint feeling of satisfaction tinged with the usual guilt. Casting a glance in the direction of his feet over the naked body he noticed an ancient metal skul symbol embedded in his breast bone glowing ever so faintly and flat now like the tattoo that adorned his face when at work. Nex had a fancy that the metallic object looked satisfied and at the same time confused after a good night. Stretching out his right arm and flexing it he smiled with grim satisfaction at the taught muscles and steel tendons that danced over the limb ending in an unnaturally powerfully grip which was, and was not his own. Lurching the six foot frame out of bed he looked like a cross between an Olympian and a skinned rabbit, if rabbits could ever be that tall. Though each fibre was thousands of years old his frame appeared and reacted as if it were no more than twenty, unlike the face that was no longer child like. Nex had not always looked like this.
Robert and Mary Cipher had run a growing computer supply business in the University city of Cambridge, but after a prosperous six years the small company was attacked and decimated by a ring of hackers who not only drained all personal finances but stole the identities of Robert and Mary. The ensuing stream of court cases, arrests, public and private humiliation ripped the Cijfer family apart and resulted in the tragic suicide of the lovely couple not long after. Nex was left alone and filled with unparalleled righteous rage. The slender sensitive boy then launched himself into a passionate quest to avenge his parents.
Making use of hardware he had managed to hide from the debt collectors of his family business, Nex set up an elaborate system to track and locate the hacker ring that had destroyed his universe. After two short years the teenager had stolen back every penny the ring owned, plus using the art of inserting misinformation had ended the lives of each member of the organisation while making himself financially independent in the process. At the end of his quest Nex found himself a wealthy anonymous vigilante, and if anyone asked he would simply say he was an IT consultant and could not talk about his work. At the beginning of the new century it was not unusual for a young internet genius to possess wealth at an early age, so at this point the boy drew no unwanted attention. Normally this would be the end of the tale, were it not for the fact that during his tireless pursuit of the criminals Nex had uncovered an ancient puzzle. Not because he had nothing else to do, but more due to his insatiable thirst for problem solving Nex found the head. Well the skul found Nex but that is another story.
Upon uncovering the icon, or at least it's location, the bone spat itself out of a rock face fracture and landed at the young man's feet. That is when Nex made his first mistake. He touched it.............. The symbol pulsated once and upon accepting it's vessel sprung up from its makeshift kurgan and dove into the boy's abdomen, scurrying through the tissue it embedded itself over Nex's sternum, wrapping alloy tendrils around the heart and erupting though the skin of his chest searing it shut against the metal and completing the fusion without further blood loss. The eyes opened, and Nex lost consciousness. The transformation had begun.
The piece was in fact a powerful Shaman from Çatal Hüyük, Anatolia, Turkey who's unpronounceable name translated roughly to Shar~ed. The ruthless Sorcerer ruled this region with an iron fist around 6,500 BCE. During the reign of terror his final act was to seduce and murder a White Witch by casting a glamour upon her. In turn the Witch (far more powerful, but weakened by love and taken by surprise) cast him into the icon and laid a curse upon him before she drew her last breath. To be able to pass into the next plane he, Magus Shar~ ed must save twice as many souls as he had injured in his lifetime, and was forbidden damaging innocents in the act of lifting the curse and securing his freedom. For thousands of years the skull lay with eyes shut, waiting, watching until it found a spirit strong enough to carry it, and enraged enough to complete it's mission.
Nex padded with natural stealth over the bedroom floor and flipped the boot switch of a complex computer system that sat quietly blinking at him from a corner. 'Some habits die hard' he thought as he softly patted the symbol on his chest and then whispered: 'Finally home old chap,... finally home'.

Ancient Turkish Religious Beliefs (Before Islam)
The religious beliefs in the early Turkish states on the plateaus of Central Asia coalesced around three main points. The first of these was a belief in animistic forces. These early Turks attributed conscious life and a discrete in-dwelling spirit to every material form of nature (such as plants and stones), to celestial bodies (sun, moon, stars), and to natural phenomena (storms, earthquakes, etc.).
